A glimpse of the past

Their Majesties King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit visited Kuala Lumpur in 1962, seen here being accompanied by the The Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri of Malaysia at the time. The ‘Father of Malaysian Independence’, Malaysia’s first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman, is seen in the first picture. What may not be known by many in Thailand is that he was of mixed Malay-Thai ancestry, and had spent part of childhood studying in Bangkok. He became a leading Malayan (later Malaysian) leader,  who kept very fond memories of Thailand.

My view is that in times past, the differences between Malays and Thais were less. Malays were Hindu-Buddhists for centuries before the conversion to Islam, and till today still pay homage to the sultans, harking back to the time of rajas and dewarajas of the ancient past.
